Short Shorts: Is Less Really More?

Short Shorts: Is Less Really More?

Well, I never thought I would be saying this, but it’s good to be back on the Hill. In spite of the rigorous workload ahead of me, I’m glad to be reunited with my college friends for one last year of college fun. However, I’m not happy to see those short shorts again.

The Doppelganger Effect

The Doppelganger Effect

Have you ever wanted a twin? Maybe you have always dreamed about having a doppelganger or wanted to experience what it felt like to have one. Well look no further because Holy Cross is known for producing look-a-likes for all of its students. Just as our motto states, we truly are “Men and women who look like others.”

S.O.S.: Save Our Students

S.O.S.: Save Our Students

Within the last few months, there have been several assaults, both on and off campus, of Holy Cross students that have resulted in physical injuries and campus disruption. These assaults, though quite few, have compromised the feeling of security many students once had. When I first

“Eighteen to Party, Twenty-One to Drink”

“Eighteen to Party, Twenty-One to Drink”

By Julie Croes I’m sure we are all sick and bored to death by the issues of off-campus party and the conflicts it has caused with the Worcester community. We’ve been written about in the newspapers, on the news, and lectured enough about it. What we haven’t heard as much about are the ways in [...]

Wait Your Turn, Freshman

Wait Your Turn, Freshman

Jason Smith is a junior, the quarterback for Newport Preparatory High School. He helped lead his team, the Broncos, to the State Championships three years running. Max Phillips is a freshman. He is as fast as Jason. He is as agile as Jason. However, many say that his ability even surpasses Jason's. And yet Jason will be the starting quarterback next year, not Max. Does this seem fair?

Reality Check: Jersey Shore

Reality Check: Jersey Shore

Fist pumping. Smooshing. Grenades. What more could anyone want from their reality TV show? What is it that we find so fascinating about these people? Why do we laugh when Snooki whines or get wrapped up in Sam and Ronnie’s relationship drama? The same reason we get hooked on most reality shows: reality TV projects upon us what our lives should actually be like.

Dinand Table: A Review

Dinand Table: A Review

07 November 2011

Countless are the times that I have wandered into Dinand with nothing but a backpack filled with books and a face that clearly betrays my despair.  I, like many other Crusaders, have perused the stacks in search of a chair to acquaint myself with for the long evening of hard work.  Often are the times [...]

Senior Year… Excuse Me?

Senior Year… Excuse Me?

25 September 2011

I think I need a reality check—because I’m pretty sure I’ve just been going through the motions of being a senior (AHH!) without actually recognizing that I am a senior, if that makes sense. I’ve started to fill out applications for next year, look for fellowships, take the GRE, but all of this seems, at least to me, to be applicable for something that is so far in the distance that it doesn’t yet require my worrying. Except, it kinda does.

WCHC Album Review: Tammar

WCHC Album Review: Tammar

24 September 2011

With only one of these tracks lasting less than 5 minutes, Tammar is keenly aware that their Sonic Youth-ian guitar hooks and shoegaze-y droning, though plentiful, can only get them so far. At its core, Visits is an album all about the art of creating a sonic atmosphere, creating music you can

WCHC Album Review: Toro Y Moi

WCHC Album Review: Toro Y Moi

19 September 2011

You should know about Toro Y Moi. The solo project of 24-year-old, South Carolina native Chaz Bundick, Toro Y Moi has been an internet darling for a couple of years now, dating back to his stellar full-length debut, January 2010’s Causers of This. That album, which has garnered Bundick some mainstream praise from the likes of Kanye West (“Cool shit,” West once commented on Toro Y Moi’s blog) and Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator, is considered one of the forbearers of the short-lived “chillwave” movement, which hit its peak around the summer of 2009 and into the time of Causers’ release.

Smith Doors: A Review

Smith Doors: A Review

18 September 2011

People pass through them on a daily basis, often giving them little thought. But this isn’t just a door. It is a gateway – a gateway to God. Seriously…the theology department is up the stairs just inside. These are the faithful portals that allow entryway into Carol & Park B. Smith Hall from the side directly opposite Healy. Truly, there can be no evil that emerges from these doors. That is, until night.

Coolbeans Chair: A Review

Coolbeans Chair: A Review

14 September 2011

Cool Beans is the place.  September is the month.  The date is somewhere in the middle, its exact number lost in a haze of late nights, readings, and papers.  The year is irrelevant: arbitrary numbers can’t measure things like this.  After all, it takes a certain level of craftsmanship and perfection to create such a [...]

A Dublin Easter, a Galway Donkey, and a Connemara Pony

A Dublin Easter, a Galway Donkey, and a Connemara Pony

06 May 2011

By Amanda Marello When my Dad and brother came to Ireland over Easter break, I knew I wanted them to see two things. (Well, a lot more than that—I had a list of thirty-five things I wanted them to see in Dublin alone! But, two main things anyway.) Firstly, I wanted them to experience the [...]

La Coruna, Espana

La Coruna, Espana

25 April 2011

I’m sure you’ve all heard the saying, “Everyone smiles in the same language” before; the words bring me right back to sitting in elementary school desk, a poster of the globe with stick figures holding hands lining the perimeter, the words plastered in bright colors above or below the picture of the circle that is supposed to represent the planet Earth.

Ireland in April

Ireland in April

25 April 2011

I have to first apologize for slacking on the blogging. Seriously slacking. To say that this year abroad has flown right before my eyes would be a complete and total understatement. I feel as though I blinked my eyes one day in January and somehow, ended up in April—surrounded by trees and flowers coming into bloom, sunshine (well, and intermittent showers; this is Dublin we are talking about after all), and picking classes/registering for housing for senior year.

Taming Graduation-Fear

Taming Graduation-Fear

16 April 2011

Only terrifying things can be exciting. Scaring yourself by taking chances is what keeps you alive. So this graduation-fear? That’s the sign that graduating and growing up is the right thing to do, these next opportunities, our uncertainty, is what’s going to keep us alive. Keep in that mind when you’re scared out of your mind for the next month and a half.
